We all get by with a little help from our friends. Friendship means something different to each of us. To some, a friend is someone they enjoy spending time with, for others a friend is their one true confidante who they trust with their lives. These variations in what being a friend means are deeply woven into the human experience. We have work friends, school friends, family friends, friend friends…the list is endless. Despite all of these differences and delineations, however, most people can agree that we all have friends, and that these friends have a large role in shaping us. Whether it be for support after a rough day at work, or for a laugh, our friends share in our memories to last a lifetime.
At the stunning wedding where we performed last weekend in Hampshire, the groom wanted us because he’d seen us at a wedding 12 years previously. He’d always remembered the effect we had on the room so he saved the idea up for when it was his time in the hot seat. His friend, the bride at the wedding 12 years before, hadn’t known we were performing at her wedding. It had been a surprise organised by the father of the bride. And our current groom from last Saturday didn’t tell his friend that he was having us at his wedding as well, he let that be a surprise for her too. Oh, it was a blast! She told us, out of everything from her special day 12 years ago, people still talk about THAT bit of the day when the happy couple were ‘Incognito’ed’.
That’s a verb you know.
If you’re lucky enough to get ‘incognito’ed’ by us, you’ll never forget it and you’ll never be the same again. And you can tell two friends and they can tell two friends, and so on, and so on, and so on. That’s the beauty of it. You never know when we might pop up. It’s all about connections.
Don’t try to impress. Just communicate, be honest and connect.
Isn’t it crazy good how it’s six degrees of separation (actually in NZ it’s two degrees of separation) like Andrew’s and Annabel’s weddings, 12 years apart. It’s all about friendships. That’s what friends are for. For good times and bad times.
Whether your friendships make you want to jump with glee and sing, ‘I’ll be there for you’ from the rooftops or Carole King’s infamous track from her iconic record, Tapestry catches your mood…
Winter, spring, summer, or fall
All you have to do is call
And I’ll be there, yeah, yeah
You’ve got a friend
…friends are worth celebrating and treasuring.
It’s Friendship day on the 30th of July and here at Incognito Artists we thought it would be nice to celebrate all of these beautiful friendships not just for a day, but for the whole of July! The friendships that we have formed here are part of what make us who we are and make this company great. Cultivating relationships in this industry is, of course, important for business, but far more importantly, it makes the job worth doing. Due to the nature of performance and what it means to work in the arts, we are truly lucky to be able to connect with others on a very special level. For all of the hours that we stand up performing, we spend three times as many giggling and having a laugh backstage. We are surrounded by each other, often in very intimate situations, which bring us together. It’s truly amazing that in this life where we get to do what we love, some of our fondest memories are the ones we get to share with each other. People are what really matters, and out of precious moments very special relationships form and blossom into wonderful and unique friendships that last a lifetime.
If you fancy a sneak peek at some of the friendships that have formed here over the years, stay tuned into our social media channels for some hilarious stories, titbits, memories – and most definitely a few entertaining outtakes!
Success is not final, failure is not fatal: it is the courage to continue that counts.
